Wool 'weights'

craftgrrlI got the pattern for the knitted legwarmers that was posted earlier :-) Not quite sure how to judge the American system of wool thicknesses though.
How thick is brushed mohair? As thick as chunky, or Aran, or double knit etc? (heh, it's probably the same as in the UK, knowing my luck!). I've been a bit confused by US knitting patterns as the wool thicknesses seem to be called by totally different names. Any ideas for conversions?
