dyeing tights

I looked through all the entriesin the faqs on dying fabric and didn't find my answer. So here's hoping one of you can help me. I have black and white striped tights that I need to dye light brown so that they'll be brown and black striped. The brown die should do anything to the parts that are already black, right? The lday at the hobbie store scared me and said to not even try dying them. She said that you can't dye nylon fabric like that, it simply won't work and that I should trying painting them instead :( Well this wasn't what I wanted to hear at all. The bottle of fabric dye I bought (liquid RIT) only says that when dyeing nylon fabrics you just need to pick a slightly darker colored dye. Has anyone tried dying fabric like this before? Any suggestions, advice, anything? I really don't want to have to try to paint them. Thanks
