I've got a tweed hat I want to be black. It's 60% wool 40% viscose (rayon). I tried dyeing it it with Dylon cold water dye, using boiling water as advised on the packet (yeah, it shrunk a bit but I was anticipating that). Now it's a dark charcoal grey. I'm not going to dye it again (at least not using the same method) as I don't want it to shrink any more, and I think it's the 40% viscose that stopped it going completely black.

So my question is: how do you think fabric paint would work? I read on a newsgroup a while ago that you can get special dye from florists that works well on certain acrylic fabrics. Any experiences with this? Anything else at all any of you can offer? If not, anyone know how to make a cloche hat?

Hi everybody, I'm so glad I found this community. It is wonderful, I love all the creative ideas and tips!! Well, hopefully this hasn't been posted before, but this is a good source for some craft supplies. They have a catalog too that you can get in the mail. I hope some of you will find it useful. Happy crafting:)

I got the pattern for the knitted legwarmers that was posted earlier :-) Not quite sure how to judge the American system of wool thicknesses though.

How thick is brushed mohair? As thick as chunky, or Aran, or double knit etc? (heh, it's probably the same as in the UK, knowing my luck!). I've been a bit confused by US knitting patterns as the wool thicknesses seem to be called by totally different names. Any ideas for conversions?

Halloween is coming soon, And I'd really like to dress up this year. I can decide on what to be! I'd like to be something unique, but also something that at least a few people would recognize. make sense? :) Any ideas of costums or things to be, that I could make myself? I have a sewing machine, & access to material/trimmings :)

Hiya . . . I've been loving the marble magnet ideas, and I've been to walmart and Michaels, and I've only seen 3/4" ones. I was wondering if anyone knew if they have 1" ones, or do they not make those in clear?

Thank you :)

In quotation marks because it's not really finished (that's for him to do) and it's not really a book! It's our anniversary today, so I don't have to wait too long before giving it to him.

The outside of the book. Note the addition of the gold paper on the spine - I tried to do some more gold foil and failed miserably. Covered it up quite nicely, don't you think?

the rest )

I'd love to do more, especially more vellum, but that's enough I think. The rest of the book is for him to fill up!

Does anyone know where you can buy a button maker (in the greater Pittsburgh area) like Pat Catan's, Micheal's, or Joann Fabrics? Any brand suggestions etc.?

Here's a tote bag I made and use for school (the grammatical error was intentional)

at Wal-Mart I bought way too much stuff to make this fall wreath for my front foyer.

total cost $6.00!

It is very simple and I like it that way. I didn't even use 1/2 of what I got and now have to take a bunch of stuff back! .. I also got a wild hair and made a haunted house one night but I was just bored.

do NOT buy these fabric paint markers. i bought (ok, stole) a pearl white one today, and im very glad i didnt waste my money on it. it turned out really badly, and ruined this shirt i had. it might have just been because it was white and i was doing it on a pink shirt (but it did say that it would work on light and dark colors), but the quality despite the color was still awful. just a heads up for anyone who sees it in their local craft store and wants to give it a try.
[identity profile] the-denialer.livejournal.com
hey, hey.

i'm going to be hello kitty for halloween.
but she has so many outfits! any idea how to make it work? hmm.

i know i need kitty ears... a bow... white tights... but what type of dress? ahh!

so yeah. any ideas for a hello kitty costume? thank you. :].

when my good friend left for college he gave me a bag bag of random junk he thought i might be able to use for crafting. one item was a red silk pleated cumberbund (christian dior at that!)...now what the hell can i do with that? now, i have a pretty off fashion sense, and its the kind of thing i would consider wearing just for fun, but it doesnt fit me (i can make the waist smaller, but because of my hips the top part just sticks out, instead of being on my stomach. and if i wear it higher up above my hips i cant get it small enough). there has to be SOME use for it, i mean, its such a fancy thing it seems like a shame to let it go to waste amongst my junk or to just cut it up for some half hearted project i never finish. so come on crafty grrrls, i know theres someone out there with an idea for me!

Finally I finished the baby blanket for my nephew who is due in 2 days. All that is left is to wash it, wrap it, and give it to them.

I made these books this weekend.

I just got a grommet setting tool. Best $4 I've spent in ages.

This book, like all the others behind the cut tag, is 1/4 sized paper, 120p, covers measure approx 4.5"x6".
French Parchtone Aged paper.

Does anyone know of a website that has clear, copyable calligraphy alphabets? I'd like to make a banner for the goth music society at uni, but I'd rather make it by hand than print one out...

Okay, I helped my mom clean out her closet not too long ago, and I "inherited" a suede trench coat (it was too big for her and she disliked it anyway because it was bulky and heavy on her) anyway, I love cutting things up and making stuff from 'em! But I hit a wall and clueless as to what to do with all this lovely suede I have! I have plenty of it, I could probably make a shirt, corset, something like that outa it - but I'd like to have some ideas. What do you think/What would you do? Much appreciated!

i just saw this skirts on a website that we made out of recycled pants. but, not just the cut up inseam and put in a panel type of skirt. this cut off the legs completely a little below the hips then opened up the legs and they were used as the front on back panel with extra fabric for the sides. i really want to attemp this with old pants but has anyone else ever made one of these? any tips? do you even know what the crap i'm describing?
[identity profile] tummymunkey.livejournal.com
hi, i'm new and happy to be here! i had no idea that there existed crafters who weren't 60+ y/o, nevermind all over the internet.

i've searched through the memories section, so i hope i am not regurgitating a well discussed topic:
how well do crafts do on ebay as for getting fair profit off it, ie clothing, which can (somehow??!) sell for $100+ on websites. can you show me any sellers that make it profitable?

I recently got about a third of my "craft crap" organized. I thought I'd have enough shelf space for everything, but I have to wait for my big butch boyfriend sister to come put up some more shelves, eventually they'll be lining the entire back wall of my office

The top shelf has my sewing machine in the back since i rarely use it, with some glue, then a whole stack of cardstock and other assorted papers and two boxes full of fibers, blank books, blank greeting cards scissors, punches, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

On the second shelf I have a whole kit of precut cardstock/vellum/speciality paper squares, with my set of chalks and some cigar boxes that I haven't found anything to do with. The 3 drawer organizer has about 1/10th of my stamps, but they're shallow drawers so easy to find things. two expandable file folders on top, one filled with about 12 million scraps of paper and another filled with mulberry paper.

Then three more boxes of ink pads, blank books, more cards, more paper, then more stamps and a tin full of watercolor pencils, and color pencils and then another flat box of more stamps.

Where.

again, sorry if this has been posted, and sorry for posting lots (can you tell it took me a while to figure out HOW to post and now i've got all these questions brewing)

i'm also wondering if copyrights run out after so many years (let's say twenty)....or where i could try finding that info...because i learned that canadian patents run out after 20 years, and then everyone can copy the idea...

sometimes my sewing machine will pull one STRAND of fibre in a fabric...i don't know how to explain it better. like, it puckers where the strand is pulled...and it will pull in a perpendicular direction to where i'm sewing....it did this on dress pants....

what's making it do that? i adjusted my tension all different ways. i dont' think it's the needle....

???

thanks

Martini set

A co-worker of mine is turning 21 on Tuesday and I'd like to put her a martini set together like someone else did on here before. I've searched the FAQs and couldn't find it anywhere- It was in a bright green round box with a small painting on the bottom.

Anyone?

Hi, I'm really interested in making this dress (link below), and it looks easy enough, but I don't have the patterns (I've looked everywhere, too). It looks simple enough, and I want to improvise, but I've just spent a good amount of money on this fancy pink satin fabric and black ribbon trimmings, so if I screw up, all that money will go down the drain. Do you have any idea of how to make this without a pattern? Thanks! Btw, sorry for cross-posting.
