tonight, after a two or so year hiatus, i decided i was going to start quilting again. since i don't have the time or patience to make an entire quilt, i'm going to make lots of smaller things. tonight's project was a log cabin potholder.

A co-worker saw some of my craftwork/sewing, and requested that I make something for her. She is renewing her vows next weekend, and wants me to make a VEIL for her! Oh, I couldn't turn down her request, and honestly it's rather exciting to be a part of something so important for a coworker. I'm a bit worried, though. It's a big undertaking, as I want it to look nice, and it isn't the kind of sewing/craft work that I have done before! I was wondering if I could get some advice from my fellow grrlz before I buy fabric and get started. Fabric advice, beadwork or accessory advice, or even just telling me about a certain hairband or means of keeping it on that you think would work well. I'm open to everything!

She was hoping for something like the following, but obviously not as long. Still, she wants a fairly decent length. ^_^

The first example she gave me.

The second example she gave me.

Obviously I won't be making it quite as long as that second one, and probably closer to the length of the first, or a smidge shorter. Any suggestions before I get started?

i'd like to make a portfolio case for my sister. i'm going for something kind of like this: http://www.jerrysartarama.com/art-supply/catalogs/0065738000000
except i would like to personalize it by adding an inside divider, an outer large pocket on the back, and a small pocket for supplies in the front. she mostly likes to paint and i'm more into drawing so i don't know too much about organizing painting supplies. what kind of divisions should i include in the front pocket? or would it be better to just make a general pocket that she can dump everything into?

thanks in advance.

I'm off to London for the day tomorrow, anyone know of any needle craft shops there?
Its all very well looking online but I like to be able to see things and touch them before I buy them.

I'm movig house soon so my life is being packed into boxes which means not much crafting *wails* I might post some pictures of some old stuff anyway.

Clipart

In response to a previous post where I showed some labels I made using clipart from Microsoft, I decided to see what's out there to let me make my own clipart - and I found it.

Metafile Companion can be downloaded here:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,3783,00.asp

It is a very simple graphics program. The graphics (which are .wmf files) don't look all that great on the screen, but when inserted into Microsoft Word then printed out, the edges of the graphics are beautifully smooth on the paper and there's no pixelization. And they can be resized as big or as little w/o compromising the quality of the printed graphic.

So, for anyone else who is into making labels or tags on the computer, you might consider using this program to make unique clip art that prints nicely instead of looking all pixelized like .jpgs usually do.

I checked the memories, but I wasn't able to find precisely what I was looking for.

My question is: what do you guys think of iron-on transfers for t-shirts? Specifically, what about the iron-on transfer paper that you can buy at computer stores and such? Does it hold up well to washing? Anything I could do to prolong the life of the tranferred image? Is it worth the fifteen dollars for the pack of paper, or would I be better off stenciling? Frankly, my dilemma in regard to stenciling is how to get a graphic image (my boyfriend's World of Warcraft character) onto a tshirt without losing recognition, thus the prospect of iron-on transfers.

I haven't been able to photograph any of the new things I have made recently so here as some pictures of some costumes I made a while back.
I used to dance on stage in trance clubs with a dance troupe called Sirenz and I was also one of the three official seamstresses.

Lots of pictures here )

I have a ton of rad vintage cotton fabrics that have been hanging around my craft room for far too long. They're beautiful and kitschy and I love them so, but I've always been hesitant to use them; many of my sewing projects tend to be a bit overambitious, and I was scared of ruining the treasures of my hoard.
Until now! I'm so happy! This was my first successful go at making a fabric cuff bracelet - all my previous attempts fell into that overambitious theme and ended up as total wrecks. It took me this long to figure out that simpler is better -- a little bit of ruffley lace and a violet button show off the vintage turquoise chintz to perfection!

This style of paper doll is the anesama, or "older sister" doll. The emphasis is placed on the kimono, the obi and the hair-do, with little attention given to the face. The dolls are primarily meant to be viewed from the back.

I plan on mounting this to the front of a card, as part of wedding gift.

Hello ladies! Thought I might share some insider info. I work at a Jo-Ann Superstore and today I was helping one of my managers with patterns. We had to go through a long list of all of our Simplicity and Butterick patterns and THROW THEM OUT. I wasn't allowed to take any, but I do know that the memo to do so was sent from the companies to every Jo-Ann store (making room for their new Spring patterns. My point being that NOW is the time to go dumpster diving at your local Jo-Ann.

I had to leave before we were finished but we were already throwing out 2 full shopping carts (mine alone had about 350). The patterns were of everything. Old lady type clothes, tailored men's clothing, regular children's and fancy children's clothing, a wedding gown or two, and at least one historical type dress.

Not sure if anyone here would want this info, but I thought I could throw it out there since we are just throwing them out (what a waste!).
Also, the memo stated that this had to be done no earlier than January 29, no later than February 10. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the help decoding the realm of Flickr. I haven't got much up loaded yet, mostly stuff from my portfolio, but here are some nifty record bowls that I made.
