Halloween - Bunnies and Psycho Geishas!
Nov. 2nd, 2003 09:56 pmHere are pictures of our halloween outfits (which we wore on Nov 1st instead but close enough!) I made my daughter's outfit, part of my husband's outfit and my outfit.

My little mutant twin bunnies. (it's funny at the party I was looking for Greta's hat and someone said, "isn't Dave wearing it?" I had to say that no, he had his own hat.
I made the bunny costume using the bee costume I made for my daughter last year. I belive it was by simplicity. Pretty basic. I had a crazy idea to put a zipper down the front but when I realized that zipper + fun fur = disaster, I took the safe route and put velcro on the back seam instead.
I improvised the ears. I would have liked them to stand up better.

My "Psycho Geisha" is a bit subtle in the front. But you can see the pill bottle and pill blister packs and chinese take-out box in my hair. I also have chopsticks, flowers and a condom in there.
My kimono was made using the instructions in the John Marshall book "Making Japanese Clothing." It's very easy to make a kimono since it's all straight lines. I didn't make a pattern but simple made squares the appropriate sizes.
The kimono fabric is blue bedsheets. I did attempt to dye them to make the sheets darker but even 60%cotton/40%poly fabric dyes terribly!
The Obi is faked (held on by velcro and the "bow" in the back isn't really a bow). the fabric is from a genuine hospital gown though. The tie over the obi is a garage sale drapery tassle.

This tells a bit more about the costume! Stenciled using basic hardware store stencils and regular craft paint (cherry red!) without any special additives.
On my head I have a junky old halloween witch wig. I used some additional fake hair (the loose kind used for braids) to wrap the wig around to make the big Geisha chignon.
The kimono came together really quickly. I'm very happy about how it turned out. (must be since I wrote a novel about it!)
