I want to make this bonnet for a friend who's due in mid-December. She and her husband are in the SCA, and I'd like to have the hat finished for the baby to wear at their 12th Night feast, which will be some time in January.
But I haven't made hats for newborns before, so I'm not sure about what size it should be. It's going to be sewn, so it won't be as flexible as a knitted or crocheted cap. Is there a standard for newborns?
I'm also wondering what I should line it with. I was thinking china silk - that would be okay with a newborn's sensitive skin, wouldn't it?
