DOMOKUN HAT

Hat: for a 22” head (average)

Materials: Brown fleece works best because it stretches some. Any sort of brown fabric would work though as long as you measure carefully to allow for stitching.

Cut 4 pieces of the top of the hat using the pattern provided. If you want to make your own pattern, just make sure that it is about 6” at the bottom and it curves up to the top point (because 6x4=24 and you need to allow for stitching). Cut one piece of fabric in a strip about 4”wide by about 23” long to make a 2” band around the bottom of the hat. If you want a smaller band, cut the width smaller.

Sew the four triangle type pieces together but leave one edge unsewn so that they are in a row (not a hat yet). Fold the strip of fabric for the bottom in half and sew it onto the bottom of the four pieces you already sewed together. Set aside.

Domokun: for hat above. If smaller hat, use smaller measurements.

Materials: red and white felt, small black half-sphere buttons

Cut a piece of red felt into a rectangle about 5 ½” long X 4” wide. Cut teeth from the white felt about 1 1/4” tall. Exact size of teeth is not really important just make sure they all look about the same. I used 12 teeth on mine but you can make as many as you want. Carefully place one tooth at the top of one of the long sides of the felt. Sew it on SLOWLY. When it’s about halfway sewed on, make sure the needle is IN the fabric and lift up the foot of the machine. Place the next tooth carefully next to it and put the foot back down. Repeat until all teeth are sewed on at the top edge and the bottom edge. Next, sew each individual tooth down to the red felt. This can be done by hand and is probably easier than with the machine. Just make sure they’re not flying up all over the place. When all the teeth are sewn down, center the mouth on the two center panels of the hat. Sew the teeth down first if the white thread is in the machine. Sew from end to end wherever there are teeth and it’s white. Then change the thread on the machine to red and sew the red parts of the felt onto the hat. Lastly, sew the button eyes onto the hat about 1 ½” above and slightly outside the corners of the mouth. I used embroidery floss to sew them on just for strength. Don’t want them falling off all over the place.

To finish the hat, sew from the band around the bottom up to the peak of the hat. Make sure to sew over the top of the hat to be sure all ends of fabric are secure. Cut excess fleece from seams inside the hat. You’re done!!!! Happy Domokun Hat!!



really, the only thing i have to add is that, as you may know, domokun really only has four teeth on the top and bottom, generally. and the basic hat pattern makes for a really super easy and versitile hat that you can pretty much decorate however you want (i have one with little bear ears on it, for example) and it's super warm! enjoy!!
