craftgrrl | Polyurethane over acrylics?

I am going to paint with acrylics on a sign that has been basecoated with an exterior paint. How should I weatherproof the decorative acrylic stuff? I thought I'd polyurethane it but I thought I should ask before I risk spoiling something. Thanks in advance for your input...
