craftgrrl | bolero pattern

I was hoping some of you crafty ladies could help me out. I desperately want one of those sequin boleros that the celebrities are wearing, but refuse to drop $150 on something that's hardly even a shirt! I'd like to make one myself, but have been unsuccessful in finding the right pattern. (So many are outdated or for the front-tie version) Sewing or knitting/crocheting is fine. I tried making my own pattern..but it came out looking like a vest those flying monkeys wore in Wizard of Oz! (Sleeves are a problem for me)
It's as easy task, I just don't have the pattern-making abilities! :(
Any suggestions?
