This has been my most favorite project lately. I just keep going back to it and thinking about how pleased I am with the result.
I wish I had the foresight to have taken a before photo of the shirt but it was a really cute shirt from Old Navy that had a ruched front and long sleeves. It was made of stretch material and over time the sleeves had shurnk. I tried wearing it that way but the sleeves were just annoyingly too short and I was tired of rolling them up. So I cut them off to a cap length and then put some elastic in to make the caps puff up some. Not too much -- just a little bit.
Then I made a template of a sakura blossom in three sizes: small, medium, and large. I used those templates to cut out material in alternating patterened and solid fabrics. I layered solid, pattern, solid and pattern, solid, pattern and machine appliqued them to the shirt so that the blossoms start a little past the front shoulder and cascade down the back of the shirt.
