Tin Question - Textured Metal?

craftgrrlI've collected several tins over the past couple of months. Altoids sours, Whitman's samplers, etc. A lot of them have textured tops - like engraved metal, sort of. Does decoupage cover that, or does it live the shape of the metal underneath? I want a flat surface for any artwork I'll put on them.
