I'm new to the comm and this is my first post. I hope you enjoy it.

A few months ago, my husband and I found a barely-used Dora the Explorer backpack at a car boot sale. Our daughter loved it, but I couldn't help noticing it was missing something - the all-important Star Pocket! I took a notion and decided that I'd try to make one. Here are some pics I took during and after making it.

<lj-spoiler title="Dora's Star Pocket">

I forgot to take a picture of the materials I used, but here's a quick list:

* Felt in purple, red, yellow, blue, green, and pink.
* 6in zipper
* Needle and (purple) thread
* Hot glue gun and glue

First I cut the shapes I needed. The star shapes are about 8 inches in diameter and the connecting strip is about 2 inches wide. I attached the zipper to the connecting strip before I sewed it to the star shapes.

One thing you might notice is I actually ended up sewing the wrong side, but, in the end, you can't really tell and my daughter doesn't care, so woohoo! I'll know better for next time.

I made happy little stars to go inside, using the hot glue gun and different coloured felt pieces. She loves to take them up and throw them in the air, shouting "catch them, catch them!"

More glue gun action went into creating the multi-coloured front of the pocket. I also added a loop to the back of the pocket so that I could attach it to a keyring. I then used that to connect it to an open loop on the backpack rather than trying to sew the pocket completely onto it.

</lj-spoiler>

comments

I'm a long time community lurker but this is my first post.

Basically, my boyfriend is a huge fan of the game Darksouls. He's a big fan of the character Sif; a large wolf who eternally guards his master's tomb and carries a large sword with him.

My boyfriend has a dog (an American Eskimo) and has said before he'd like to have a plush sword toy for her to play with so he can take pictures of her as Sif.

Now, I'm not amazing at sewing (I'm really new to it), and I'd be hand sewing the project, but I'd like to try to make one. I've made flat teddy bears before, so I figure something basic like that would be okay. I've done some searching for inspiration and haven't been able to find any patterns for plush swords that I've really liked. Could anybody point me in the direction of sewing resources that could help me get on my way?

( Beyond the Cut are Reference Pics )

I figure I won't be able to do the different patterns on the handle of the sword, but if I could get the basic shape of the sword itself, I'd be super happy. And of course, I'll post the finished product here!

comments

This was my second-ever power tool project and I can't wait to think of more to do.

A little acrylic paint and some scrap fabric, and she's got a nice little set.

( More photos... )

comments

I had hoped there would be more crochet and bead patterns. There are a few patterns I left off, because they weren't really piratey and I wanted to have something left for Halloween. There are eyepatches, felted hats, a gazillion things with skull or jolly roger motifs, ships made with milk cartons or from model kits, baking pans, beads, several squid-related items, and a skeleton fish. Almost all are free patterns, and there are 30+ links. (Some are older, but I think it's fun to have them all in one place.)

I worked my butt off on this, so please post the link far and wide if you like it.

(crossposted to my LJ)

comments
