I was asked by a coworker to help with costumes for a stage production of Donnie Darko. Time and a limited fabric budget wouldn't allow me to make the Sparkle Motion outfits exactly like the movie, but here's what I've got so far:

They're bringing in the black tops (or, in this case, a bodysuit) themselves, and they'll have leggings under the skirt as well to avoid "wardobe malfunctions." I liked the diagonal stripe on the bodysuit when I first sewed it on, but now I'm wondering whether it looks too much like a beauty-pageant sash. I'll be making scrunchies/headbands and possibly wristbands with the scraps of silver lycra.

I can never find dresses that fit through both the bust and the stomach. Simplicity 3823 has separate bust and midriff pieces, so I was able to make them in different sizes and then just gather the bottom of the bust a little more to make them fit together.

And then reuse the skirt pieces with a linen print.

This was a birthday gift for the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] lady_amorika. The bear is from a book I found at a thrift store, and I made the dress up as I went along.
