I wanted to do something fun for my sister for Christmas this year. She loves Scrabble, so I made her a magnetic white board for her office, like so:

I don't have room to make such a thing at home, normally, so I waited 'til I got to my parents house and used my dad's basement workshop (and his expertise!)

The first cut
I forgot to get a shot of the stuff before we started, but you know what a scrabble board looks like, I'm sure. |
 |
Another shot of the cut board
We used a metal straight edge and a x-acto knife to do this |
 |
The white board
Time was short, so we used a combo whiteboard/corkboard we got at a office supply store for this bit. We trimmed it and used bits of the trimming to make the corkboard magnetic. |
 |
The workspace
Just a quick shot of the mess we made :) |
 |
The board being weighted
After gluing the white board to the back of the game board, we weighted it this way. Initially we tried to use clamps, but for some reason the clamps kept making the board shift and slide. |
 |
Gluing the tiles
I used a dab of epoxy for this -- more was much, much better, as a thin layer meant the magnetics were stronger than the glue. |
 |
The magnets are super-strong mini magnets
I think they're actually 'rare earth magnets'. We wanted them to stick through the part of the board we left whole. |
 |
The tiles and the glue
If I had to do it again, I'd find a better glue, I think. It stuck if we used a big glob, but wasn't as pretty as I wanted. |
 |
The finished product!
You can see we took two of the tile trays and glued them to the bottom to use as a holder for the markers. |
 |
Scrabble board completed and in use!
Hanging up in my sister's office. |
