So a friend started out with this (for a belly dance show, so, be warned, it's a BRIGHT and SPARKLY post... ~.^):

Gyspy Skirt - Original Ruffling

But something was, uh, a little off with that floral fabric AND it wasn't long enough, so I told her I'd fix it...

...first I had to take it apart, which was a job unto itself. After the unruffling...

Miles of unruffled ruffles

Not only was the color choice... questionable, the central part of the skirt, a circle skirt, was cut very, very wobbly:

Wobbly hem

This is how much I had to cut off to make it even (you can't really see very well, but in the center of that piece the edge goes down to nothing - that was the shortest part):

Fixing the hem

Then I went out to get some fabric to take the place of the floral.

New color scheme:

But another friend nixed the pink, so I ditched it and cut yellow and purple strips, ruffled them:

RUFFLES!

(I highly recommend a ruffling foot, it is SO COOL)

...and put it together (miles and miles of serging, I tell you!):

Almost done?

However, it wasn't long enough. It's hard to make a skirt for someone who is 5'11" when you're only 5'2"!

So to add length, a small pink ruffle was added at the bottom - but because it was so short, I was worried it would flip up along the serged edge, so I put a decorative stitch around it to pin it down:

Hem stitch

But another friend said we had to pay homage to the original fabric somewhere, so the sash idea was born:

Heart applique

Heart appliques and a beaded edge (which makes a pretty nice little clicking noise when you shimmy).

(I don't have a close-up of the beaded sash, thought I did, so this is blown up from the full-length picture...)

DONE!

Done!

(As mentioned, I'm a fair bit shorter than the person whose skirt it is, so it looks a little weird on me, but you get the idea!)
