a very long time ago i posted to ask for advice on a project i was working on - trying to make a bookcase look like a film reel.
the only step we have left is to mount it on the wall and i thought i'd share my pictures and tell y'all what i did. :)

LOTS OF PICS!
what i ended up doing was buying a blank stencil at joann's and cutting holes in it to use that to add the film strip to the edges.
after painting the bookcase (which isn't real wood - but like an MDF materal) black, i decoupaged the pictures on, and added a light grey paint with the stencil i created. after the paint was dry we put a top coat of poly on the top to seal it.

this is the view from the top, the bookcase will actually be mounted this way (sideways on the wall) below a window so that we can use it as a ledge as well as a bookcase.

the shelf is actually going up in the newly painted media room at my bf's house. which, cuz i'm in a sharing mood - i also made curtains for.

the curtains were my first sewing project in 10 years! not bad for a novice! the fabric was actually supposed to be for scarves, thus it had these awful white lines to break up the squares - i ended up adding ribbon to cover that up.

here's a closeup of the hand-bead work that i did on the top of them:
