Fabric Poppies

craftgrrlI'm wanting to make some sort of hair accessory using an artificial red and black poppy. I also want to use the poppy to decorate a handbag. This is all to go with a very 50's style black dress.
But I can't find artifical red and black poppies anywhere, so I wondering what the best way might be to try and make some. Since most fabric frays I', thinking of felt but it doesn't seem very summery. Especially for a hair thing.
Any ideas?
