Skirts!!!!

craftgrrlHi, I'm new to this community. I just recently joined and have been reading through all the entries and have been INSPIRED.
I want to make a skirt but have no idea how to go about it. I've heard of A-line skirts and pencil skirts. Can anyone tell me what they are? What's the difference? Which one is easier to make? How do I make them? I've never really sewn anything before so this would be my first big project. Everyone makes it sound so easy, so any words of advice would be very much appreciated.

Oh, and I bought some purple plaid type of fabric, if that's of any concern.
