replacing old converse fabric?

craftgrrlI have a pair of converse whose fabric is entirely ripped/destroyed around the heal and ankle area and they look disgusting, but the soles of the shoes are perfectly fine. Is there any way I can somehow sew another type of fabric onto the entire shoe to cover up the old fabric?
