My biggest craft inspiration right now is to take premade things and put my own touch to them, like painting  a name on it or putting stickers  on it and then sealing it. Well if you were to do that, what would be the best paints to use and best sealing methods and stuff considering this is an item that will be used daily, or should you even try that on an item that will be handled lots and in hair lots? Could you try to get some kind of resin and back the brush with resin?

My other thought, was to take casting resin and make little  paper weights and stuff with cute images inside them. Like use a pringles lid as a mold and do like that? What should I be aware of about doing that/?

this is the type of hairbrush I'd be trying to personalize with paint and stickers and stuff. It's got a fairly flat back is kind of shiny and metalic as you can see, but it's also kind of curved while being mostly flat , if that makes any sense.

And I've been so productive!

Before I post the fruit of my labors, I have a question. What are good replacements or substitutes for expensive birthstones? I can swing most of the semi-precious stones like amethyst but things like topaz, emeralds, diamonds and such are quite prohibitive.

Anyways-- Here are some pearls for June:

I just bought a crocheted straw cloche made out of paper straw (this hat, for the curious). I like it a lot and would like to make some of my own, but I can't seem to find any information or sources on the material. I know crocheted goods can be made from raffia too, but I can't find any information on how that is done. Most of the craft raffia I see seems pretty messy for that kind of work.

Basically, I'd like to make some hats out of some straw-like natural material. Can anyone help me out with how-to information or sources for the materials? Thank you!
