carpentry craft?

craftgrrlhmmm...I don't know if you guys and gals can help me with this but...
I'm moving into an apt soon and have just about no furnishings- so I figure it would be fun to make my own!
Specifically, I'd like to make a desk and a coffee table, but I have never really built stuff like this and I want it to be somewhat crafty but I do not use too many tools as I don't have them.
Alternitavely, I'm thinking about getting random stuff from the thrift store and transforming them into furniture.
Any ideas/designs? Any other places I should be checking out?

p.s. sorry about no pics for the bowls/plates post- already gave them to my friend, but I'll post up mine own whenever I get to them.
