hair flowers

I want to make myself some hair flowers. Something like this:

but i have really thick hair so a plain little clip wouldn't really hold much of my hair.
Do any of you have this problem? Anybody know where i can obtain some good strong clippy things....online or otheriwse?
Have any of you made these before?

And once i do get the right kind of clip? How should i adhere the flower? Hot glue?
Open to suggestions.....
