Sewing Question

craftgrrlI seem to be having a problem with my sewing machine...for some reason, about half way through a long period of sewing, the needle will hit the metal plate and break...leaving me completely screwed....
this was happening for a while, and i just realized what was going on...now how do I STOP this from happening?
Pleeeeeassse give me some suggestions, I'm in the middle of a very big pocketbook selling escapade.
