Fabric question...

Has anyone used the "quilt fabrics" at Joann's or Handcock's fabric stores to make shirts or skirts out of? The fabrics on the back wall rolled up n the boards. I know they put a bunch of sizing on the fabrics so they feel stiff, but I was wondering if anyone has used them and how they have softened up....if it would be worth the effort of making a shirt out of it or would it still be too stiff/uncomfortable......
