tote bag fiasco

I bought one of those $3 canvas tote bags from hobby lobby so I could screenprint something on it. I wanted a pink one, so I got some rit dye and dyed it. I washed it in the washing machine and when it came out the side seams were ripped to shreds. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you think this is just because the bag is shitty and cheap or because of the dye or what? I'm thinking about sewing up the seams past the shredded part which would just result in a skinnier bag. I'm just pissed because I was excited over my pretty pink tote bag.
