corduroy?

hi folks! I checked the memories and posted this in the quilting community, but they're a small group over there, so I thought you might be able to help me too. 've never quilted before, but I sew a lot, and I've been entertaining the idea of making a quilt from old corduroys (thin wale). Would corduroy be too thick though (I've heard of some people making quilts out of felt, so I wasn't sure)? I'm used to sewing on my mother's old, tough sewing machine, but now that I'm at school, I only have access to my roommate's Kenmore mini ultra. I don't want to ruin her new machine, so would it just be best if I did the squares and batting by hand? I know not everyone is a quilter here, but I thought I'd throw the idea out to you all since I'm sure some of you have made some fab creations out of cords. any advice you could offer will be greatly appreciated. thanks!
