Several questions. :)

Hello. I have been watching this community for a long time and finally decided to join, because I need help.

I've decided to make a "pocket shrine" as a gift to my boyfriend, who will be turning 18. I'm going to be using an Altoid's tin. My problem is.. How can I decorate the outside? I've heard that you can't use regular paint as the metal won't take it, but you can use nail polish? Is this true? Also, I've been contemplating using fabric to decorate the outside (maybe inside too), but I have no idea how to go about attaching it to the metal. If I decide not to decorate the inside with fabric (if it's even possible), then should I just use tape to collage the inside? Or if glue, what type? And on a more personal level.. Anyone have any ideas on what kinda things I could put in the shrine? :) Such as.. trinkets of some sort, poems, but any particular ideas, being that he's my boyfriend and he's turning 18.. and I love him very much, I'm looking for specifics.
