Yikes!

So, my friend was supposed to come over and teach me how to knit, but she flaked out on me and now I'm trying to teach myself from various websites. I got the hang of casting on, and did okay with my first row of knitting, but I'm kind of perplexed on what to do with the original slipknot once I get to the end of that first row. Also, I found that while knitting, the length of yarn between my needles got longer and longer... a tension problem? I'm using size 10 needles, and trying to make a simple scarf.

Oh! One more thing... what is this purl business? Do I have to knit one, purl one? What is the purpose of that?

Help would be soooo appreciated.
