knitting question!

im trying to knit a black and white checkered scarf and I was wondering what is the best way to do this? ive been trying out different techniques and so far everything is difficult and not very nice looking. Is there a way I can do it without having to make two and sew them together/make a big one and sew it up like a tube. Becuase intarsia makes lines on the back so Id hafta use one of the previous options. is there a way to make it reversible? Because on a scarf you cant really have one nice side and one crappy side as youll be able to see both...pleeeease help I need to start on it monday and finish it by the 26th
