Red Heart Casual Cot'n QUESTION

craftgrrlhey, this is somewhat of a stupid question.
I am following a hat pattern and using Red Heart Casual Cot'n Yarn. For some reason the hat is not making the proper hat curve, its staying flat like a doily. I've had this problem with the CHUNKY yarn as well. I want to make the hat with this yarn.
IS THERE A WAY TO FIX THIS?
WHAT CAUSES THIS?
