DIY Little mexican altars

I remember shopping my local mexican store (now extinct) Raices and
seeing them charge 20.00 for DIY altar kits.I thought that was total
BS and went home to brainstorm how I could create one at home without
paying 20.00 (unless of course,I wanted to make it really special,heh)
for supplies.
here is some examples of little altars:

you can go to your local 99 cent store and pick up a box of tea with a
wooden box,or scour your local grocery store.You can use nail polish
as the paint,and use bright colours,such as red,orange,green,etc.
feel free to experiment and use such things as skulls,saint pictures,etc.
or if you want to make it extra personal,you can put family photos inside
(like for dia de los muertos,deceased family).Here is one that I made for
my brother's girlfriend for this past christmas:
