Now, for something completely different
Dec. 19th, 2002 10:47 amI'm a relatively new member in this community (maybe about a month), but there seems to be a lot of vitriol flowing about what should or shouldn't be posted to the community, mis-postings, recriminations, etc...I really hope that it ends soon, because it's off-topic. I don't care, I want to see crafting!
That said, since someone said this community was originally all about 'this is what I'm working on!' and sharing and getting ideas, I thought I'd put money where my mouth is, be narcisstic, and share with y'all.
What I've been working on. Unfortunately, no pictures because I don't own a digital camera:
* A four-stranded crocheted blanket, in teal, grey, black and white, which I fondly call my "Sharks blanket" (in reference to the San Jose Sharks). It's just a Q-hook and back-loop single-crochet. This one is for ME ME ME, after making four others for friends at the beginning of the year. That got dropped for...
* Harry Potter scarves. Three of them, actually, one for a friend's sister, one I sold to another friend of mine, and one for ME ME ME (mostly because I made some goofs and decided I couldn't in good conscience sell it). This has been my re-introduction to knitting.
* The Scarf That Wouldn't End. I found this lovely, brilliant red Microspun yarn that I want to make a thin (width-wise) red scarf in stockinette stitch for a friend of mine. I haven't been knitting long, and I discovered through trial-and-error (and error and error) about the fact that stockinette stitch curls on the edges. The book I'm using, Knitting and Crocheting for Dummies, has had a couple of suggestions on how to prvent this, one of which I've tried and failed to work, another one I haven't tried yet. Although I'm really tempted to shuck straight needle attempts altogether and try doing a tube scarf with circular needles instead. Except I need to find size:3 (US) circular needles, which I haven't been able to track down yet. This got dropped for...
* Crocheted hats & scarf sets, using this pattern from the Lion Brand site. For the last one I made, I used the idea someone on LJ had of making pockets at the end of the scarves to slip your hands in, which I think turned out really well. I think you would need three skeins of the Chenille to make it, though.
* Cross-stitch. I blame too many sales. I picked up two Gold Collection patterns (a lighthouse and Elegance of the Orient in their Oriental series) I really should *not* be doing with my skill-level and level of free-time, that I would like to give as gifts.
* Knitting a sweater. I've bit the bullet. It's why I got back into knitting. I'm doing my first one, based on a looksee of a pattern I found in a beginner's knitting book that I thought I could actually handle. I feel extremely nervous about clothes patterns. I'm using cheap-o Red Heart (in Claret) as it's a practice sweater, but I do hope it turns out okay because I love this color. I'm about 7" or so into the first (back) panel, so we'll see how it turns out.
* Soap! Reading this community finally pushed me over the edge into soap-crafting, something I've been resisting for several years. As I was churning them out for a, uh, lot of people for Christmas, I was pretty basic, making batches of lavender-oatmeal, rosemary, and a rosemary-scented 'scouring' soap (with cornmeal added for grittiness). I sadly expect there will be more soap made, as soon as I can assure myself of an outlet to use the rest of it.
Does anyone else have this "diversity problem"? What are *you* working on?
