How to make a ruffle skirt
Aug. 3rd, 2005 12:44 pmHi craftgrrls!
When I posted this skirt
earlier I got a request for a tutorial. I have written down how I made my skirt, so if you want to have a go at trying one yourself
How to make a ruffle skirt
I have no pics but I hope you can understand the basics of it anyway!
Step 1:
The easiest way to do it is to look at a tight skirt that fits you well, and then just copy the upper part (on to paper or directly on to fabric if you want to live dangerously ;D ). How far down you want to copy it depends on where you want the ruffles to begin. You want to make the skirt a bit wider with every added ruffle (think wedding cake :D), so to get the right effect you need to make them longer with every added piece.
Step 2:
Then to get the ruffle effect: on the add-on-pieces sew two parallel lines with extra long stitches on your sewing machine and (important!) don’t fasten or cut the threads! You will use them to pull the fabric together to create the ruffles. The longer piece of fabric you have the longer you can make the ruffles! (If you're a bit lazy like me you can also use a gathering/ruffling foot that you can buy for your sewing machine.)
Step 3:
Then just sew on the first ruffle to the skirt and then add the other one to the first ruffle. Just to give you a hint on the wedding cake-principle, look at the picture for the measurements of my skirt. You can make it even wider of course if you like to!

I hope you found this tutorial helpful. It's my first one here :)
