How to make metallic scratch-board.
It's pretty simple, but quite fun.
You'll need these items:
--metallic board (sold in craft stores, or use those left-over Christmas boxes.. YAY! recycling!!)
--oil pastels or crayons
--india ink (Wal-Mart carries this in the Crafts Dept.)
--a soft paintbrush, about an inch in width
--baby powder
--old newspaper
--scratching utensil (a nail, something pointed, I use a pointy nail file)
--scrap or sketch paper and a pencil
--masking tape
--Sealer spray (gloss, or matte, doesn't matter. It's your preference)
-OK. First, lay out old newspaper, this is messy work.
-Draw your design on the sketch paper, making the lines fairly even. Remember this pattern must fit into the borders of your metallic board.
-Cover the metallic board with the pastels or crayons in the color pattern you want. Make sure all the board is covered, use your fingers to smear in any patches that don't have good coverage. PRESS HARD. Leave a short border all the way around the board to apply tape.
-Shake baby powder out on the board, smooth it with your fingers, lightly powdered is good, then blow off the excess.
-Paint the board evenly with the india ink. Be sure to pay attention to areas that look light gray, these are not well covered, go over them again.
-After the board is completely dry. In a humid climate this may take a while, regular places ... about 20 minutes.
-Tape your board to the surface of the table. If it's not stable, then tape the newspaper, then the board.
-Very, very lightly powder the back of your sketch.
-Place your sketch on top of the scratch-board, make sure it's even to where you want the color to come through. Tape this down on two adjacent sides (so you can flip up one corner without disturbing the marks).
-Retrace your drawing firmly with the pencil. Don't press too hard, this may take up the india ink.
-Remove the paper carefully, paying attention to the marks. If they aren't all on there, replace and trace that area again. Usually, the marks will be there, even if they're somewhat light, and traceable.
-With your pointed object, scratch along the marks you made on the board. Remember, though, the only way to make a correction on this is with a permanent black marker. The lines still somewhat show, however.
-When it's finished, spray it with the sealer. If you want you may place it in a store-bought frame, or paint the border with an acrylic solid paint. At this point, whatever you like is ok!

did you know you can also use aerosol hairspray as a sealer? Works great! Esp. on chalk or pastels drawings!
