I really wanted to learn how to make basic twisted cables for a knit handbag, and I've tried learning them for crocheting and knitting and everything I do seems to turn out terribly. :(

Crocheting - I tried doing the treble post stitch, but the stiches don't seem to stay together. They're separated and anything put in the material as a bag would just fall out.

Also, the backs of the cables don't stick backwards, they just lay flat with the rest of the fabric.

Knitting - These don't even resemble the cables in the pictures at ALL. My roommate and I went through the instructions together and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Does anyone have any simple instructions for cables? Preferably something without the cable needle!!
