Making a picture storybook for children.

Does anyone have advice on making a storybook? I was going to make a book by taking pictures with my digi cam, printing them on glossy paper, getting everything laminated and then bound.
The issue I might have is adding text once I have the pictures loaded into my computer. Should I use Word to add words to the page? I have no experience with photo editing software so that's sort of out. (The teacher knows our books are going to be very basic so no, these books are not going to be published.) :)
Any other thoughts on the process of printing and/or binding it once I have it all together?
