You might actually get more out of this thinking than a clear mobile top to hold your rainbow-making crystals - that'd be a good thing. :)
To start with, I was in the mall on Thursday, and saw something hanging in one of the ritzy stores' windows. It looked like one of those 70's brightly coloured glass vases in a plant hanger, so I took a closer look. Turns out it was big pony beads giving it the colour, the frame was done with heavy wire and the beads were attached with a fine wire. Sounds like something that can be easily done, actually, even using the way to make dreamcatchers but loading it up with beads.
I don't have wire and don't know exactly where my beads are, but I do have creativity. I have some of those plastic sheet things that cling to the inside of your windows, so the picture always glows with the sunlight. The colours had faded, so one at a time I peeled them from the window and coloured them in with a Sharpie. I only have red and green right now, and the originals are faded to blue and white, so I've got blue, white, red, green and purple now, which isn't too bad.
But I also have clear pop bottles. I was thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to cut pieces out of one, colour them with sharpies, and hang them like a mobile in the window. My soulsister told me that for a girls' birthday party, she'd cut out butterfly shapes, painted them, and suspended them from a tree in the front yard. I was thinking that exotically coloured fish would be interesting, maybe birds of some sort, or just geometric shapes. Or even just cut off the base of the clear plastic pop bottle and colour it, maybe in sections, and use an opaque paint or something to facet the 'vase' and set it in your window so the colours would spill in over everything when the sun shines.
That led me to thinking about the other part of the bottle, and other things in the window already that spill colour everywhere (namely my crystals). I thought of incorporating them into some of the other ideas, but that'd detract from their own intrinsic beauty (or maybe not, might try it sometime). A clear thing to put them on, however, should do nicely, and that's what I've got with the pop bottle base...
I cut off the bottom, rather close to the middle actually, and measured around. I divided it into enough sections to have one per crystal. I then cut 'hooks' attached to the rest of the base. I poked two holes in the bottom (with my seamripper), strung thread through, then hooked my crystals onto their new mobile top. It looks much nicer than the popsicle stick thing I'd put together for them before, and is more kinetic than just putting them back on the curtain rod.
The top of the pop bottle might work well too, or it can be a mini-greenhouse for plants, or a bathtub toy, or probably a dozen other things. :)
Hope my rambling got you somewhere. :)
