hi all...
I'm thoroughly amazed at the responce towards my request for blankets.

I've an idea.... and I'm gonna need lots of your help.
hello Crafty people!

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in making a little plan of mine come to fruition.

I am a nurse in a nursing home in Staten Island, NY. All too frequently, I get the complaint of 'I'm cold'.... we do provide blankets and comforters, but they're essentially the same as hospital issue... scratchy, not too warm unless they're piled on you so thick you can't move, (this becomes an issue when you're under 3 thin blankets, and weigh all of 90 pounds...its like being tied in)

So, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to help me in a sort of mission, I'd like to start making afgans for the elderly. Simple crochet or knit squares sewn together to make interesting, colorful warm blankets for people who all too often have very little.(alot of my residents don't get visitors, and live in drab little rooms with little to no family input... no decorations or pictures.. these rooms are positively bland... )

Would any of you guys and gals like to donate a square? I'm hoping that enough people will have interest in this, so I can make this a reality.... (with one person making afgans, its a long process... if a bunch of us team together, we can get lots of good stuff out to the whole bunch of people who really deserve good stuff, especially in their golden years)

So, please let me know if anyone is interested... This can be a real stashbusting event....

as long as you guys are still interested, I'm thinking as for size-- a 6 inch square knit or crochet from worsted weight, washable yarn.  I suggest a 'G' hook, or #8 knitting needle.   But as long as its 6 inches square(if its off a little, I can do a make it fit by crochet/knit, but would rather not do that), any washable yarn weight will do.
I'm leaving the patterns up to you, be as creative or simple as you please (simple garter stitch, or single crochet squares are a good thing...)

As for a deadline, how does the end of October sound?    I figure that by the time they come in, I can have the blankets assembled and presented to the facility by Thanksgiving.

The reason I dreamed this up is that my maternal Grandma passed away and left myself and my mom a load of yarn, and I figure she'd like me to do something worthwhile with it...

Any and all interested, please e-mail me at bacasuso(at)earthlink(dot)net (yep, screwed up to hopefully keep the spam bots away) with 'Craftgrrl Blanket Squares' in the heading, so I can reply with my mailing address.  Squares from all over the world are appreciated, and, I will see if I can work up a certificate to mail to everyone who presents a square....

I will cross post on craftster, and, of course, anyone and everyone is allowed to crosspost this to any interested parties.

With admiration
