Do linings matter?

craftgrrlThe pattern for the skirt I'm making calls for a lining. I could do that, or I could just put in a facing at the top to stabilize the waist, which I'm somewhat inclined to do. Is there any serious advantage to going with the lining? I have this irrational bias against them as being needlessly fussy.
