Crochet gauge question

Okay, I posted earlier about this pattern, and I've realized that in order to make it in any decent size, I'm going to need to crochet very small. Even a gauge of 10 st/inch is a little big. That would make the design roughly 6' long!

What yarn and hook size is normally used for something like this, does anyone know? Or, alternatively, what would I need to get a 10 st/inch gauge? Any help greatly appreciated.
