Can anyone tell me why my sewing machine is doing this?:

The sewing function works. It just won't let me fill a bobbin, but I can't sew without a bobbin! I've threaded this machine a thousand times before and haven't had any problems with it. It's threaded exactly how I always thread it when I need to fill a bobbin, but it's just not working. I've pulled all the thread out and redone it just to check my tracks about four or five times today. The spool doesn't move at all and then seems to jump in spurts, and the thread just seems stuck. It fills the bobbin to a certain point, not quite halfway, making that horrible screeching sound the whole time, and then it just stops filling the bobbin. The screeching continues whenever I touch the pedal.

I have to finish a blanket today, and I don't know what's wrong. Is there some sort of obvious problem that I'm overlooking?
