Design ideas

I have a mirror with a plain brown wooden frame (dark stain.) I want to spruce it up and I thought about painting and decoupaging it, does anyone have ideas that might be perhaps more creative? If I decopauge it I will either buy whimsical stickers or magazines with pictures to the same degree.
If I *do* end up decopauging and painting it, would it be okay to paint straight on the wood or should I do something to it first?
