furniture

So I'm somewhat sick of trying to furnish my apartment (nicely) on a poor girl's budget, so I've decided to try and make some furniture myself. I've gotten inspiration from the fed ex box guy(http://bedzine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/bed_800.jpg) as well as Franky Gehry and the whole swedish cardboard furniture thing (http://www.dandanews.com/table_sm.jpg and http://www.dandanews.com/shelf_sm.jpg) but I'm also trying to come up with my own ideas. I was thinking of making a couch shape out of discarded textbooks (glued together? taped together? nailed in place?) and then securing pillows and cushions to the seat part. Also, in my parents' house, my bed was just a bunch of twin mattresses stacked on the floor and that made a good day bed/couch thing as well.

Does anybody have any other improvised poor girl furniture ideas? Ideally I'd like to be able to use materials that no one else wants (ie that I can get for free or close to it).

Mainly I'm looking for a couch/futon, a comfy chair or two (or 6), and a desk.
