A Castle fit for a Dragon
Jan. 23rd, 2008 11:09 amOver the weekend, my son and I made a huge medieval castle so he could play with his dragons and knights in it. It was VERY easy and really fun to make. I don't have step by step photos, but it's really simple/easy to figure out. I got the idea out of my childcraft the how and why library; make and do book from 1964.
What you need
1. Cut the top of the box off (each individual flap in a solid chunk, set aside, you will need these later).
2. Use the marker to make a guideline of what you want the top of your castle to look like and to make the shape of your draw bridge door.
3. Use box cutter to cut out shape of your castle and the draw bridge (make sure the draw bridge is on a side where the bottom flap is one flowing piece from the side of the box so it will easily open and close instead of fall off when you cut it out).
4. Use screw driver to punch two holes in draw bridge and two holes above door in the same alignment for the yarn. (Do not add yarn until it's been painted).
5. Paint castle desired base color, inside and out.
6. Add paint details (stones, windows, hardwood floors, etc). Whatever you want.
7. With all 4 of your left over top flaps, use the marker to draw a wavy line across them. Cut them in half by the wavy line and tape them to the bottom edge of the box (tape on the bottom of everything). Use leftover pieces to make "corners" on the mote.
8. Paint mote.
9. Use printed out photos and glue them to the inside/outside of your castle as desired. (We did old paintings, two knights and windows looking outside from inside the castle). You could do gargoyles, tapestries, etc.
10. Paint paper towel rolls dark gray and glue knights to them (moveable to play with or can be statues).
11. I crocheted the yarn into chains and inserted it through the holes, with knotted ends for the draw bridge chains.

Front of castle with two knights and the draw bridge open.

Top view of the castle.

The East wall, overlooking the ocean. The painting is called "Zombie Supper" (A take on the last supper by Leonardo da Vinci).

The South wall, looking into the mountains/hills at a nearby castle. The painting is of Count Vladimir III (The REAL dracula).

The West wall, overlooking the enchanted forest. The painting is called "The Birth of Venus" and was painted by Sandro Botticelli. (One of my favorite paintings of all time).

The North wall, with the door/draw bridge and looking out over the town below the castle.
