Mailing Bottles

I've read you can mail bottles.

Has anybody ever successfully done this?

I've search for how-tos, but have only found instructions pertaining to glass bottles.

I'm interested in sending out a 1 or 2 liter plastic bottle.

How do you do this?
Do you think it is guaranteed to get bent in shipping?

Is this an item that can be delivered to a house? Or will the recipient have to go to the post office to pick up the item?
