changing colors...

i bought a white knitted beanie that has a visor on it, im gathering the visor is just a piece of plastic with a simple knit stitch encasing it. but i want to know if it would be possible to dye this a brown color. im not really one for wearing a lot of white, plus it will get all dirty. i dont want to ruin it, so i needed some advice on how to go about this process. thanks so much for your help!
