Dara, I've got your corkboard
Aug. 21st, 2008 12:04 pmOtherwise known as quickie .75 cork board remodel.
Story:
Needed a cork board for next to my office desk.
Hate those fabric covered things, and retail, they're pricey.
Plus I'd probrably be tricking it out anyway.
So, got one at the thrift store for .75.

I imagine some one's mother patiently stenciled this for her daughter's room. Aside from the stenciling, it could have been brand new. It's almost a shame.......
Ah well, time to cover that up with some brown craft paint.

I originally wanted a nice green, but all I had was a pale army green. Which despite my attempts to doctor it up, just looked like MUH.
So I went for Espresso instead.
~Unfortunately, during my doctoring I got some paint on the cork where I didn't want it.~
Then, what to stencil?
I attempted some abstracts shapes with masking tape.
Uh, no.
Plus the tape didn't stick to the cork.
Same went with more shapes with some oil based 'craft' clay.
Then I spotted my lovely brass caliper, and it hit me.

~I collect keys. Not the cool olde fashioned kind. More like the kind people lose on the street somewhere. Are you missing your key? I just might have it.~
Pinned everything on with plain sewing pins.
Then I hit it with the airbrush.
My better gold paint was all gloppy. But since it's actually opaque, vs slightly transparent, I ran it through anyway to get the base coat on.
Rinsed the brush out, then ran some other gold acrylic craft paint through to blend the outer edges and blend everything together.
Took off the keys, gave the neg areas they were on a light spray with the gold (they were too stark for my tastes).
And voila.

'sall right, especially since it'll be covered in papers most of the time.
