Color Tinting Embroidery

craftgrrlI just have a quick question for all of those out there who have used the crayon method for coloring before you embroider. Are crayons really the best thing to use or can you use other stuff? For example, I have a large set of the Prismacolor colored pencils and I was wondering if those would work as well or if I should just go buy me some Crayola.
I'm already thinking of the holidays next year, so this would be for gifts. Any tips from someone who's done this before would be great.
