Basketball jewelry
Mar. 12th, 2009 09:33 pmI made a birthday gift for a 12 year old girl who plays basketball.
I headed to Michael's first, hoping for some inspiration. They didn't have any basketball beads, but they did have some basketball felt pieces with sticky backs. I bought those and then looked for something else. They have so many charms available now and although they had all themes, like travel, sewing, pets, they had nothing for sports. I ended up getting a package of 4 gold wings, figuring that if you play basketball you'd want wings on your feet. I also picked up a package of 4 flat thin pendant or earring pieces. Two were round and two were oval. You could attach hanging beads to them if you wanted and they had a loop at the top of them. Then, I headed to WalMart next door, still hoping to find basketball beads. Luckily, they had them. I was still trying to figure out how to make what I had into earrings and a necklace and then I remembered seeing nice velvet cord at A.C. Moore. So I went there and picked up brown cord and a package of small rings and some other thick jump rings that I thought I might use on the necklace.
At home, I opened all my packages and spread out my stuff. I took the paper off a felt basketball and stuck it to one of the round earring/pendant pieces so that the top loop stuck out. It was nearly the right size. To cover the excess, I just put a second felt basketball on the back. Then I added a jump ring and hung a wing in front of each basketball and put them on ear wires.
For the necklace, I decided on a choker length and cut the velvet cord to about 17 inches. I used crimp ends and attached a barrel clasp. I strung on the small, closed rings, alternating them with the plastic basketball beads. In the center, I made another felt pendant and hung a wing on each side so if it flipped over, you could still see the wing on it.
The birthday girl was delighted!
