Tips for sewing with plastic?

craftgrrlI sew recycled products using clear pvc plastic (it's sometimes used for covering school books and tablecloths). It's not backed with any kind of fabric. Anyway the last few times I have purchased any, I find it is very crumpled. As you can't actually iron plastic I'm wondering how to smooth it out. Any ideas?
